Manuscript Refinement — Voice, Flow, and Clarity
I refine manuscripts so they read naturally, clearly, and with a consistent human voice.
I don’t rewrite your work.
I don’t flatten your style.

Before (Client Draft)
John walked into the room and looked around carefully. The room was dark and filled with shadows. He felt a sense of unease in his body as he continued to observe the environment. The furniture was old and covered in dust, which suggested that no one had been there for a long time. There was a table in the centre of the room, and on the table was a book. The book looked old and mysterious. John felt nervous as he moved closer to the table. He reached out his hand slowly and picked up the book. It was heavier than he expected. He wondered what secrets it might contain. |
After (Voice Refinement)
John stepped into the room and paused. It was darker than he’d expected—the kind of darkness that seemed to settle into the corners and stay there. Dust lay thick over the furniture, undisturbed, as though the place had been left alone for years. In the centre stood a narrow table. A single book rested on it. He moved closer, slower now. He picked it up, surprised by its weight. |
What Changed (and why it matters)
• Repetition removed to improve flow
• Over-explanation reduced
• Generic phrasing replaced with more natural language
• Sentence rhythm improved
• Atmosphere allowed to emerge without being stated directly
The result is writing that reads more naturally—without changing the underlying story or voice.

Many of the manuscripts I work on have been drafted or assisted by AI tools. My role is simply to ensure the final result reads naturally and professionally.

What I Look For
• Flat or repetitive sentence patterns
• Generic or overused phrasing
• Inconsistent tone or voice
• Dialogue or reactions that don’t feel natural
• Subtle issues others often miss
Most of these aren’t obvious—but they shape how your writing is experienced.

I take on a small number of projects each year, so I may not be able to accept everything—but I’ll always let you know.
I work slowly and carefully, and I only accept projects that feel like a good fit.
If you’re looking for a quick turnaround, I’m probably not the right person.
I’m probably not the right fit for heavily romance-focused or explicit material.
If you value a more considered approach, feel free to get in touch.

Testimonials
“James’ initial offer was to proofread my story and help me with the grammar issues, but he went the extra mile and pointed at some story inconsistencies while at it. His suggestions were spot on, and his communication style was both professional and encouraging. He even edited my book’s entire last chapter to help me better understand the problem with my wording and sentence structure. I’d advice to hire his services.”

I asked James to proofread my short story for grammar mistakes, but seeing as my manuscript was a translation, he pointed at some inconsistencies and tweaked the style as well. He was careful with my wording, and his suggestions were professional and assertive. He even edited the synopsis and all contents. I’d advise hiring his services.

James gave me so much insight into my writing and my story. As a non-native English speaker, I was a bit scared to hand over my manuscript to a professional proofreader, but he handled everything with compassion and gave me constructive feedback on how to tackle certain issues. James encouraged me to trust my writer’s voice and gave me specific tips on how to improve my writing further.

James proofread my manuscript thoroughly. Honestly, after a few betas, an editor, and my own proofread, I didn’t think he’d find much in typos, but wasn’t I surprised!
He picked on little details we all missed, and beyond that, he made suggestions to improve wording, along with some scenes that needed a bit of adjustment.
He went over and beyond my expectations, and my book reads so much better for it.
I highly recommend his services!
